Progression Update (1)

So far, myself and James, have filmed the majority of our music video, and edited a selection of footage. the video is our version of the 'Eyes Set To Kill' song, 'Darling.'

Filming:
  • Male Vocals
For this, we have used a silhouette of James singing into a corded telephone, with a plain white back board lit up by a spot light, which allows the filming to create a dark figure singing into the phone, but with an unidentified identity.
  • Guitar Sections
We used a similar effect for this, first I filmed James playing the guitar along to the full length of the song, focusing on the torso and guitar, and not focusing on the face at all.
Secondly, James filmed myself playing the guitar, which allows us to use different footage for creating certain effects in the music video.
Th effects we used for this was slightly different compared to the silhouette used for the male vocals, we used the same plain white back board, but placed the light infront of the guitarists, allowing a spotlight on the instruments, this also provided a nice shadow enlarged on the white back board.
  • Breaking Objects
We managed to gain various items to break for the music video, which included a mug, 12" Vinyl, 7" Vinyl and a 'fake' mobile phone. We managed to gain permission to use an empty part of the college's facilities, due to health and safety we unsure about this originally, but we brought some safety goggles for this procedure.
We filmed in a remote corner, on a paved surface, set the camera on a tripod and started throwing, whilst recording, in an angered rage.

Editing:
  • Overlay of Text with effects
During various sections of the video editing, I've implemented text, which overlays the video on which we've recorded. For example, if there's a section of video which displays James' silhouette with the lyrics 'Darling', then I put that lyric on the video which has been tilted, Earthquake effect and the Opacity reduced to half.
  • In-Sync (30 secs)
We've currently only edited the first 30 seconds of the video, as it's been quite time consuming, and has taken a lot of time and effort, to get the section so far in-sync with the song.
  • Song Title and Band Intro
At the beginning, I've added the song title and band name, to make it appear as a 'proper' music video, and so the audience may see whom they are listening to.
  • Blending Effects
During various sections of the music video, the blending between certain clips/scenes has been quite a dramatic change, so adding in some of the various video filters and video transitions, its helped the sudden change be more subtle. Using such effects as 'Ripple Dissolve', 'Dip to Color Dissolve' and 'Fade In and Out Dissolve.'

Over the coming weeks, Myself and James are hoping to finish recording for:
  1. Female Vocals
  2. Drums
  3. More Guitar (Possibility)
  4. Various Filming
So far, I feel that we are going at a steady pace, and the editing is slightly more time consuming than I originally predicted, but we shall finish this video within the due time.

Photography

Equipment
Camera: Nikon D3100 w/ Tripod.
Backdrop: White.

Image Itself
This section will be about what photography we shall need for the digi-pack we're creating, it shall include:
  • Locations
  • Subject
  • Poses
  • Costumes
  • Angles
  • Emotions
Location
Hopefully we'll be able to find a location with a plain background, which we'll be able to edit later on to darken and with a faded out effect. So we shall either use the dark room, or choose to use a plain room with the featured wall for the photography.

Subject
The photograph we're looking for will need two models (Male and Female) who shall attempt to cover a range of poses, feelings and what ever shall come naturally.
  • Pose - The pose we're hoping to achieve by the models will include a male and female, where the male stands behind the female the the side, and puts his left arm around her, with the female, whom is infront, holding her right arm up towards the males hand, where they meet creating a heart with their hands/fingers.
  • Costumes - For the photo shoot, we'll require the two models in plain clothing, hopefully dark clothing which can be easier to edit for the digi-pack. Wearing a jacket, T-shirt, studded belt, jeans, these will be all dark, except the belt.
  • Extras - We're going to add a prop into the photograph, of a knife which will appear slightly to the side of the female model, being held by the male model, maybe dripping with blood.
Angles
We'll photograph the models from head on, maybe take various images to give a general idea and a range to choose from, we'll also use a couple of long distance, 30 degree angles and empowering shots, to give off a range of effects.

Emotions
Hopefully we can have a range of emotions from the models to choose our preferred photograph, this can range from no emotion, sad, happy, maybe even crying to give extra emphasis to the song.

Music Video Analysis B

Title:   Eyes Set To Kill - Broken Frames
Length:   2:55

Description:
This video I've chosen to analyse because it's down the band name, also this video takes a lighter approach to the videos, whilst still keeping the darkened affect throughout. It has various cut scenes, along with a lot of disorientation, and back light effects.

Textual Analysis:
Camera Work:

  • Mid Shots to give a perspective of the person along with showing a brief view of the location.
  • Close Ups of sections that have been picked up along the way, or of the musical instruments.
  • Full Shots shown of the story character wondering around, giving a visual perspective of the story outline.
  • Stationary Camera but used on a track, which allows to follow the group and video without any shaking and irrelevant and unwanted shaking in the video.
Mise-En-Scene:

  • Wooded area, allowing lighting effects and the story to take place.
  • Lead singer changes clothing numerous times to give different effects during the video.

Sound:
  • Recorded song, with video added afterwards.
  • Microphone.
  • Stereo Sounding.
  • Basic Singing, subtle and calm (Female Vocalist.)
  • Screaming, loud, vigorous (Male Vocalist.)
Editing:
  • Lots of cut scenes at the beginning, which is a nice effect before the song starts.
  • Cuts to the story constantly, keeping the viewer enticed with the outcome of the story.
  • Shifting effects, looking like slight judders which adds a sense of power to the song.
  • When the light bulb is being put into the ground, editing of the recorded video to remove the hand, so small sections of it being screwed in added together to create this.
  • A progressive blurry effect added to some parts of the video, I love this effect as it seems really thought out where it should be implemented into the video (See Image Below.)

Extras:
  • The lighting effects used within the video are used to their full advantage, getting the best possible outcome, it would be a great effect to do (See Image Below.)
  • I enjoy the fact that they put a light bulb in the ground, it's quite inspiring although fairly easy to do, it's unique.

Music Video Analysis A

Title:   Eyes Set To Kill - Darling
Length:   4:09

Description:
I have chosen to analyse this music video by Eyes Set To Kill because it's the music video that my group are going to attempt to re-enact. It will be a great video analyse as it'll break down the components of what we need to do and achieve, also the standard that we have to work at to achieve a music video for this genre.

Textual Analysis:
Camera Work:

  • The camera work consists of a hand held camera, to provide the jump effect which flows throughout the music video.
  • Theres a lot of mid shots, close ups (to show the story of the video) close ups of the instruments.
Mis-En-Scene:
  • Dark Clothing as it stands out in the lighter scenes.
  • Lead Singer (Female) wears standard clothing, so she stands out from the band.
  • Lots of props, including various clothing, doctors gown, face mask, latex gloves, speakers, projector and films, sterilized equipment.

Sound:
  • Recorded song, with video added afterwards.
  • Microphone.
  • Stereo sound.
  • Basic singing, subtle and calm (Female Vocalist.)
  • Screaming, loud, vigorous (Male Vocalist.)

Editing:
  • Flicks between singer(s) and band members, whilst constantly venturing off into the storyline, showing the surgeon, and the extra female who's being operated on.
  • Shows the instruments often to show some part of the band, and the instrumental sections.
  • A grainy effect flashes across the video at add a disorientated or old effect to the video, I enjoy this effect and shall attempt to create this effect during editing.
  • There's a text overlay effect implemented into the video, which appears at various points (see image below.) Where the word 'Lies' appears in a text form overlapping the video itself.

Extras:
  • I noticed that the video keeps in time with the music, so when the music slows down, the video itself slows to a reasonable pace, with less cut shots to alternative clips.

Mind Map - Metal

The reason all these are key elements to the metal genre, is due to peoples general understanding of what Metal is.
The fashion has developed from scruffy tshirts and jeans to skinny jeans, make up, screaming, etc.
The music itself purely the instruments listed, as having a violin in a metal song doesn't suite the genre of music.
The groups itself have expanded from a male only genre to a multi sex genre, which widens the horizons of the overall concept of Metal Core genre.
